Scottish actor and comedian Stanley Baxter has passed away at the age of 99.
Born in Glasgow in 1926 Baxter became one of the most celebrated figures in British television delighting audiences for decades with his unique humor and versatility. He rose to fame in variety theatre before starring in hit series between the 1960s and 1980s.
Baxter was best known for his iconic sketch Parliamo Glasgow in which he humorously translated phrases in a thick Glaswegian accent into the polished style of British TV. His talent for parody and impression made him a household name.
In 1963 The Stanley Baxter Show launched on the BBC followed by The Stanley Baxter Picture Show on London Weekend Television in 1973 showcasing his skill in playing multiple roles in film and television parodies. He won several BAFTAs for his groundbreaking work.
He also appeared in children’s television including Mr Majeika and later performed as a pantomime dame across Scotland for many years. Baxter’s voice and comedic timing were further celebrated in BBC Radio 4 sitcoms and recorded plays.
Baxter lived his final years at Denville Hall a care home for entertainment figures in north London passing away surrounded by memories of a career that helped define British comedy for generations. His legacy remains as one of Scotland’s and Britain’s most enduring comedic talents
