In another disturbing incident of religious intolerance in India Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar drew widespread criticism after forcibly removing the hijab of a newly appointed Muslim doctor during an official ceremony on Monday.
The shocking event took place at the Chief Minister’s secretariat Samvad where appointment letters were being handed to newly recruited doctors. As the hijab clad doctor approached to collect her letter Kumar reportedly looked at her and asked “What is this?” before bending down and pulling her hijab off leaving the woman flustered and quickly pulled aside by officials.
The act triggered outrage across the country with opposition parties condemning the Chief Minister’s behavior. The Congress party called it a “vile act,” highlighting the shameful conduct of a senior official toward a woman in public office. The Rashtriya Janata Dal questioned Kumar’s mental state describing the incident as completely unacceptable.
This episode comes amid growing concern over hate crimes and religious discrimination in India. A recent U.S. report recommended designating India as a country of “special concern” due to serious violations of religious freedom and increasing prejudice against minorities. The report criticized the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and highlighted the role of the RSS and the ruling BJP in promoting Hindu nationalism with a history of targeting Muslim and Sikh communities.
