Canadian former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding once a
celebrated athlete for Canada has been captured by the FBI in Mexico after a
lengthy international manhunt and flown to the United States to face serious
criminal charges marking a stunning fall from grace. Wedding 44 had been on the
FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list since March 2025 with a reward of up to $15 million
for information leading to his arrest after U.S. authorities accused him of
leading a sprawling transnational drug trafficking network that allegedly moved
massive quantities of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico into the U.S. and
Canada and generated more than $1 billion in illegal proceeds. Prosecutors have
charged him with conspiracy to distribute and export controlled substances running
a continuing criminal enterprise money laundering and multiple counts of murder
tied to his alleged drug operations including the killing of a key federal
witness. FBI Director Kash Patel likened Wedding’s criminal enterprise to those
of notorious kingpins like Pablo Escobar saying the arrest was a major victory
for law enforcement and a blow to organized crime while U.S. Attorney General
Pam Bondi highlighted the severity of the charges. Wedding’s alleged ties to
powerful cartels including Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and his years on the run
under aliases such as “El Jefe” ended with his capture in Mexico City where he
had reportedly been hiding under cartel protection; he now faces federal
prosecution in California amid cooperation between U.S. Mexican and Canadian
authorities to dismantle the network and bring co‑conspirators to justice.
