After nearly two decades of negotiations India and the European Union have finalized a landmark trade agreement Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced calling it transformative for both sides. The deal opens India’s traditionally guarded markets to EU goods and services while providing European exporters greater access to one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Officials say the pact covering countries that represent roughly one-quarter of global GDP will boost trade investment and cooperation across multiple sectors. The agreement also includes significant tariff reductions including a cut on imported European cars from as high as 110 percent to around 40 percent with further reductions phased in over time. Analysts say this could reshape the Indian automotive market and benefit European manufacturers.

Trade between India and the EU was valued at around 136 billion dollars in the past year and the new deal is expected to expand that relationship promoting cross-border investment and market growth. Leaders from both sides emphasize that the agreement reflects a broader strategy to diversify partnerships amid changing global trade dynamics including tensions with other major economies.

The formal signing of the agreement will follow legal review expected to take several months with full implementation likely within a year. Officials say the pact marks a major milestone in global trade diplomacy creating opportunities for businesses strengthening economic ties and reinforcing India’s role in the international market.
