U.S. President Donald Trump says he will direct federal agencies to begin releasing government files related to aliens extraterrestrial life unidentified flying objects and unidentified aerial phenomena responding to what he called strong public interest in the subject.
In a social media post Trump said he will order Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and other agency heads to start the process of identifying and declassifying records calling the topic “extremely interesting and important.”
Earlier Thursday Trump accused former President Barack Obama without providing evidence of improperly disclosing classified information about aliens during a recent interview saying Obama “made a big mistake.”
When asked later Trump admitted he “doesn’t know if aliens are real or not,” but said the move to release files is about public transparency rather than confirmation of extraterrestrial life.
Trump’s announcement comes amid renewed global curiosity over unidentified aerial phenomena with the Pentagon and U.S. military previously cataloguing sightings but finding no evidence that aliens have made contact with Earth.
U.S. government archives already hold Unidentified Aerial Phenomena reports and related documentation some of which have been publicly accessible in limited form. The move could significantly expand what is available to researchers journalists and the public.
The decision has reignited discussion around government transparency on UFOs an issue that has fascinated scientists lawmakers and citizens for decades and could lead to new scrutiny of long‑held records once they are released.
